Coherent Lagrangian Pathways Near an East Alboran Front

چکیده
In the eastern Alboran Sea, frontogenesis (FG) is a dominant process for fronts extending from Spanish coast toward basin interior, promoting large vertical displacements that connect surface mixed layer with oceanic interior. Using realistic, high-resolution model simulation this region, we conduct offline advection of virtual water parcels released near during 2-day episode intense FG. Three-dimensional trajectories exhibit high variability depending on release location, and some large, rapid are induced by different coherent submesoscale flow patterns interactions among them: Ageostrophic secondary circulation associated strain- mixing-induced FG internal waves generated currents over topography. These deep mostly irreversible, at least short time scale, because rapidly changing patterns. Significant diapycnal mixing density changes occur along as they pass through bottom boundary layers. While expect these processes to be typical computational expense such Lagrangian analysis complexity its outcome present considerable challenge more comprehensive assessments.

Lagrangian Coherent Structures near a Subtropical Jet Stream
Direct Lyapunov exponents and stability results are used to extract and distinguish Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) from a three-dimensional atmospheric dataset generated from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The numerical model is centered at 19.788N, 155.558W, initialized from the Global Forecast System for the case of a subtropical jet stream near Hawaii on 12 December ...
متن کاملLagrangian Coherent Structures
Mounting evidence suggests that fluid advection can effectively be studied by considering special material surfaces, which are referred to here as Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs). What makes these material surfaces special is their distinguished attracting or repelling nature. Notably, LCS are often locally the most strongly attracting or repellingmaterial surfaces in theflow, and as such...
متن کاملDynamically Consistent Lagrangian Coherent Structures
In this paper, we compute coherent structures based on radar data collected in Monterey Bay during August 2001 and August 2003. The Lagrangian structures are extracted from a finitetime Lyapunov exponent field. In contrast with earlier approaches, the integration time used in computing the Lyapunov exponents is not constant but adapts to the timescales of the different flow regimes present in t...
متن کاملRoll Clouds Associated with an East Asian Cold Front
On 11 January 1998, a cold front formed in southeast China as a result of a cold-air outbreak in northeast Asia. During this synoptic development, a series of roll clouds (along the SW–NE direction) was observed in East Asia; some of the clouds stretched for over a thousand kilometers. This roll cloud formation moved southeastward across Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, and Japan, and eventually int...
متن کاملDissipative inertial transport patterns near coherent Lagrangian eddies in the ocean.
Recent developments in dynamical systems theory have revealed long-lived and coherent Lagrangian (i.e., material) eddies in incompressible, satellite-derived surface ocean velocity fields. Paradoxically, observed drifting buoys and floating matter tend to create dissipative-looking patterns near oceanic eddies, which appear to be inconsistent with the conservative fluid particle patterns create...
